Second Grade Happenings February 5-9

Happy Super Bowl Weekend! I hope it's a great one!

Enrollment for the 2018-2019 school year is underway and we have a few spots available in Kindergarten! We find that word of mouth is the best way to market our school.

If you have friends or family with upcoming Kindergarten-aged students, please share what you love about our school! We will be having an open house to see Kindergarten in action on Thursday, February 8th from 8:15-9:00 or 2:15-3:00. Feel free to invite any families that have expressed interest in our school.

As always, families can also call Mrs. Frischmann at 766-6116 to set up individual tours.

A few reminders:

-Our Valentine exchange is scheduled for Tuesday, February 14th. You should have gotten a list of names on Thursday. Sending in Valentines is optional, but if your child chooses to do so, please make sure he/she has one for everyone. Don't forget to wear your Valentine colors on Tuesday!

Curriculum Updates:

Reading - We will be starting our 4th reading unit, "Bigger Books Mean Amping Up Reading Power", this week. This unit has students continue with fiction work from the previous unit, but also focuses on foundational reading skills - fluency, literary language, and ways readers can hold on to a story when it is long. Students will continue reading common books with their book clubs.

Writing - We will write our Narrative Post On-Demands this week and will start our new writing unit - POETRY!  This is a fun unit that produces quite a few unique writing pieces.
Math - We will continue our work with multi-digit addition and subtraction as we solve word problems. Our work focuses on reading the word problem, thinking about what information we know and what we still need to know, and ways that we can solve the problem. Setting up the information that is known from word problems with a math mountain is a strategy that helps students visualize different ways they can set up an equation to solve.

Social Studies - We'll be starting a new unit in social studies, The History of Kaukauna. The kids love learning about Kaukauna's past in this unit!

Have a GREAT weekend!
